SAVE OUR PLANET 5K

Event Name: Save our Planet 5K
Location: Hollywood, Florida

Another hot race morning. While I was getting my camera gear ready at the finish line I saw something unique about the runners walking past me. The colorful blend of race shirts and medals around their necks. It is a story of innovation, sustainability, and runner satisfaction that every race director should hear.

Let's face it: as Race Directors, you order what you think is the perfect number of shirts and medals for your event, only to find yourself with leftovers when the dust settles. It's a common challenge that can leave you feeling like you're sitting on a pile of wasted resources. But what if I told you that Victory Sports Management found a brilliant way to turn this potential waste into a golden opportunity?

A focused male runner in a white tank top and purple Lakers shorts, wearing bib number 643 and sunglasses, leads another runner along a tree-lined path at the Save Our Planet 5K in Hollywood, Florida.
Two men run side by side along a park path, one in an orange T-shirt with bib number 58 and one in a black T-shirt with bib number 115, during the Save Our Planet 5K in Hollywood, Florida.

Here's what they did: instead of letting those extra shirts and medals gather dust in storage, they decided to offer them to participants in their latest 5K as an option. Runners could choose from a selection of shirts and medals from past events that they might have missed out on. As I watched finishers cross the line, I saw everything from neon yellow tops from last year's night run to the sleek black design from their trail series. Medals ranged from the whimsical beach-themed ones to the more classic designs. It was like a fashion show of running memorabilia!

The genius of this move wasn't just in clearing out inventory. It created a buzz among the runners that was palpable even in the sweltering heat of TY Park. I chatted with Sarah, a regular at these events, as she proudly showed off her "new" shirt from a race she couldn't attend due to a work commitment. "It's like getting a piece of running history," she beamed. Another runner, Mike, was thrilled to add a missed medal to his collection. "I've been kicking myself for missing that Halloween run," he said, dangling his newly acquired pumpkin-shaped medal.

A smiling young man with a red beard and teal headband, wearing a purple event T-shirt with bib number 1215 and dark green shorts, runs along a park path at the Save Our Planet 5K in Hollywood, Florida.

What struck me most was how this simple idea transformed the atmosphere of the event. The excitement was contagious, and it added an extra layer of enjoyment to an already fantastic race. Runners weren't just participating in today's 5K; they were connecting with the broader running community and the history of local events. I overheard conversations about past races, shared experiences, and future running goals. It was clear that Victory Sports Management had not only solved a logistical problem but had also strengthened the bond among their running community.

As a photographer who's seen my fair share of races, I can't emphasize enough what a game-changer this approach can be. Not only does it solve the problem of excess inventory, but it also creates a unique experience for runners and fosters a sense of community around your events. It's eco-friendly, cost-effective, and adds value for your participants. So, to all my fellow race directors out there: take a page from Victory Sports Management's playbook. Consider offering past race swag at your next event. You might just find that those leftovers become the main course in creating an unforgettable race day experience. Trust me, your runners (and your bottom line) will thank you for it!
